As women, we have been equipped with the ability to have different types of orgasms with different feelings and different levels of intensity associated with them. Freud suggested that women experience two types of orgasms: clitoral and vaginal. For Freud, a clitoral orgasm was immature, reached by adolescents during masturbation. His theory contended that once women started having sexual intercourse, vaginal orgasms were a more mature way to reach an orgasm. Well, I commend Mr. Freud for being so interested in the female orgasm but, lacking the female genitalia himself, he did not hold the absolute truth about female orgasms.
According to Dr. Kim Wallen and Dr. Elisabeth A. Lloyd, the female orgasm reached solely from sexual intercourse has often been deemed as the ultimate feature of our sexuality. In their article “Female Sexual Arousal: Genital Anatomy and Orgasm in Intercourse” the authors assert that the male orgasm is more “reliable” than women’s. In other words, men reach an orgasm with more ease. Men can reach orgasms with strong selective pressure and the outcome is ejaculation, which contributes to their reproductive success. Women, on the other hand, do not need to orgasm to achieve success at reproduction, thus the female orgasm, besides being elusive, is also misunderstood and widely understudied.
To offset the disadvantage women have with regard to men when it comes to ease of reaching an orgasm, we have been “built” with the capacity to reach orgasms of different types.
THE BEST KNOWN THREE ORGASMS
There are three types of orgasms that are commonly known for females: clitoral, vaginal, and G-spot.
Clitoral Orgasm: According to Dr. Elisabeth A. Lloyd as quoted in Women’s Health, “The clitoris has the indispensable function of promoting sexual excitement.” The 8,000 nerve fibers of the clitoris, when stimulated, interact with another 15,000 nerve fibers in the entire pelvic area, leading to a fulfilling, neat, and intense orgasm. The Federation of Feminist Women’s Health Centers has identified 18 structures that are part of the clitoris, inside and outside of our bodies. In other words, the clitoris is a sex powerhouse, designed only for our sexual pleasure.

Vaginal Orgasm: Some women can experience an orgasm during intercourse. However, only about 25% of women can achieve an orgasm during intercourse. One of the explanations for this fact is that women who have a shorter distance between the clitoris and their urethral meatus are better able to reach an orgasm during intercourse because the clitoris is stimulated indirectly by the penile-vaginal contact during sex.
G-spot Orgasm: The G-spot, named after Dr. Ernst Gräfenberg who first wrote about it in 1950, is a sensitive area located just behind the frontal wall of the vagina, right between the pubic bone and the cervix. G-spot orgasms are very intense. Moreover, the stimulation of the G-spot may lead some women to “ejaculate”—a la Samantha’s “elusive female ejaculation” episode in Sex and The City— a fluid that is expelled from a woman’s vagina during the G-spot orgasm. This orgasm is sometimes referred to as “squirting,” and female ejaculation seems to be the subject of much curiosity. Some women claim their G-spot orgasms are stronger than those reached by clitoral stimulation. It is hypothesized that the G-spot may be an extension of the clitoris; the back portion of the clitoris, which may explain its existence.

THE LESSER KNOWN TYPES OF FEMALE ORGASMS
Ten types of orgasms have been identified. Besides the three main orgasms previously discussed, there have been another seven types of female orgasms identified. They are:
A-spot Orgasm (anterior fornix orgasm): This orgasm is achieved by stimulating about 7-10 cm or 3-4” deep in the front wall of the vagina.
Deep Spot Orgasm (posterior fornix orgasm): This orgasm can be achieved by stimulating the deepest back wall of the vagina right before the cervix.
U-spot Orgasm: This orgasm can be achieved by stimulating a small area which contains sensitive erectile tissue and that is located directly above and on either side of the opening of the urethra.
Breast Orgasm: Some women can reach an orgasm just by the stimulus of their breasts.
Oral Orgasm: Some women are very sensitive in their mouths and can reach an orgasm when kissing or performing oral sex.

Skin Orgasm: Some women can reach an orgasm at the touch of their skin, during a massage, a facial, or any stimulus to their skin.
Mental Orgasm: Some women can reach an orgasm during auditory or visual stimulation, like watching a movie, reading erotic content, or watching others having sex. This orgasm happens without manual or oral stimulation.
Since we have been blessed with the ability to reach an orgasm a multitude of ways, it is important that we learn how to stimulate our bodies to reach it. Now that we know that there are so many types of orgasms, we can practice and see how many types of orgasms we can feel and master.
